Description

A finely woven elegant and muted antique Sivas carpet woven in central Anatolia in the late 19th century.  Woven around circa 1880 means the dyes are very soft indeed, faded and with minimal distressed wear in places this antique carpet has enormous character.  With a cotton foundation it allows for a finer weave compared to other Turkish carpets such as Oushak.

. . .

The design is classical and Persian in influence, with a wonderful floral design and delicate corner spandrel designs, using faded pale pinks, subtle greens, yellows and greys. A wonderful carpet to use in a traditional or contemporary room setting.

Condition wise this piece is very good, the pile is medium high over the majority of the carpet. There are a few areas of wear and lower pile but structurally it is very good and with our excellent underlay we supply this carpet would sit flat and be very durable.  A couple of small old burn marks are visible too which we can easily repair if required.  In general this late 19th century carpet has been well cared for and can be used for many years to come.

Sivas carpets were often commissioned for the West, using elegant curvilinear designs from Persian rugs and intricate floral motifs combined with wide borders with repeating cartouche designs.  This design has been seen in Ardebil carpets, which is the design on this Sivas carpet.  These soft carpets have a lot of decorative appeal and are ideal to furnish around.
