Antique Sivas carpet

Circa 1890
520 × 340 cm 17’ x 11’1”
£25,000

Description

A very fine large antique Sivas carpet woven in central Anatolia, dating from the late 19th century, it has wonderful dye change throughout the carpet where different dyes have been used and faded over the last 100 plus years.  With a cotton foundation it allows for a finer weave compared to other Turkish carpets such as Oushak. The design is classical and Persian in influence, with an exquisite and intricate medallion and corner motifs.  A swirling border design of subtle plants and flowers.  Condition is very good, with the carpet having a fine wool pile all over, a couple of tiny lower areas of pile but nothing significant.

. . .

Sivas carpets were often commissioned for the Western market, using elegant curvilinear designs from Persian rugs and intricate floral motifs combined with wide borders with repeating cartouche designs.  This design variation can also be seen on Tabriz carpets, a wonderful muted carpet that have a lot of decorative appeal and are ideal to furnish around.  Generally their palette is very soft and the wool used of good quality and soft under foot.

Please request a home visit to see this beautiful antique Sivas carpet in situ to see if it works with your interior.  We travel all over the UK showing hundreds of our carpets and rugs in situ and we would love to help you.
