Antique Kuba Kelleh

Circa 1850
435 × 161 cm 14’3” x 5’3”
£14,500

Description

Remarkable early Antique Kuba Kelleh (Kelleh meaning long format) with stunning colours from the mid 19th century, the design in the main field is a fascinating array of geometric motifs, a crisply well drawn pattern with early dyes.  Elegant minor border of vine and leaf design, along with the Kufic larger graphic border.  Early dyes have been used on this wonderful tribal Kelleh carpet, pale blues, aubergines and soft yellows.

With the age of this carpet approximately around 170 years old, some low scattered wear and old repairs are visible.  It has a couple of old patches which have been repaired many years ago, but are structurally strong and the colour match is good.  The fringes and sides have been tidied up and it is ready to add an abundance of character to the floor. Supplied with our underlay this would be secure and durable floor art.

Kuba is a rug producing town located in the north-east of the Caucaus next to the Caspian Sea. The port of Baku in Kuba had its own school for carpet-making.  An amazing and collectable Caucasian rug with great design and a fantastic array of early natural colours.
