Antique Fereghan carpet

Circa 1870
447 × 307 cm 14’7” x 10’
£34,000

Description

An early decorative antique Fereghan carpet with glorious colours. Woven in the last 1/4 of the 19th century with a floral pattern in very good condition for a persian carpet of this age.  The subtle blue dyes are very charming and a lovely tone to furnish around.  The border design consists of flowing trees in soft yellow tones with the main field a variety of pinky red dyes.

. . .

A great palette of colours, rich and elegant which would work beautifully on a wooden floor.  The carpet’s condition is good for its age – being around 140 odd years old.  Some lower areas in places but no worn out areas or big restoration to this piece.  Please view the additional images to see the colours close up and condition.

Fereghan carpets are unlike their neighbours Sarouk which are more formal often using a medallion. Fereghan weavers preferred floral motifs of shrubs and vines using more green dyes and hints of yellow. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
