Antique Fereghan carpet

Circa 1870
401 × 302 cm 13’1” x 9’10”
£32,000

Description

A truly magnificent antique Fereghan carpet woven in Central Persia in the mid to late 19th century. The variety of soft red/terracotta tones in the main filed compliment the muted green and pale blue dyes.  The yellow dye used on the floral patterns and minor border is a particular highlight.  A great open design which would add real warmth to a room.

. . .

In wonderful original condition with the majority of the carpet in good pile and no major repairs.  Some minimal restoration to some of the floral designs to preserve the carpet but no holes or stains.  The pile is lower in places but not threadbare, still a lot of use left in this 130 year old plus carpet.

Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
