. . .

There are vivid blues and warm reds with soft sandy tones, a rare and marvellous carpet that would is extremely durable.  It was woven around circa 1900-1910 and has been used, these antique carpets were made so well they get better with age and use.

Karaja carpets and rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border.  The rugs often use 8 pointed star motifs and sometimes they weave in animals and people which adds great interest. They are easily recognisable with three repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif has the latch-hooked design and the other two are eight-pointed stars.  This large carpet has more of a Heriz design and early Serapi colours mixing all three designs in many ways.
