Description

A great little antique Shirvan rug woven in the last 1/4 of the 19th century. Using the ‘Memling Gul’ design to great effect in the repeated pattern in the centre. Full of wonderful interesting dyes you would expect to see on a rug from the Caucasus and Shirvan.  Condition wise it is fair, with some low areas of pile and old restoration with a finely woven medium pile height.

. . .

As it is a Shirvan rug they generally were not woven with dense piles, so the handle of this rug is very light and fine.  We always supply excellent sturdy rug underlay with every rug, this gives the rug extra body and stops it from moving around on the floor. A beautiful interesting antique caucasian rug that would sit happily on the floor.

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are generally found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
