Antique Shirvan rug

Circa 1890
162 × 102 cm 5’3” x 3’4”
£5,650

Description

Stunning late 19th Century Shirvan rug, full of amazing dyes and bold geometric motifs! A rare yellow main border with star design, and stylised animals can be seen scattered in the dark blue almost black background and a blue animal in the centre too.  The light blues, aubergine dyes and corroded black dyes are early colours from around circa 1890.

Condition wise, it has original fringes and they are lower in height in areas, but all original.  Sides are secure and the wool pile is good on this rug.  Some corrosion to the black dyes, which is consistent of a rug from this age, as this black/brown dye had a lot of iron properties which has corroded over the last 130 odd years.

Shirvan rugs are famous for their tribal motifs and interesting tribal designs. With animals, people, yurts, and geometric motifs from lots of different Caucasian rugs.  Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvan’s are generally found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
