£11,000

Description

One of the best antique Shirvan rugs we have ever seen! In remarkable original condition with a soft lush wool pile all over this fine and collectable example.  The natural dyes are simply stunning with vibrant rare yellow dyes, varying in the S border design, which has happened due to over 140 years of oxidisation.  Deep indigo blues can be seen on the background and beautiful pale blues and greens too.  Shirvan rugs are famous for their tribal motifs and this exceptional rug has an abundance of them! With animals, people, yurts, and geometric motifs from lots of different Caucasian rugs! This rug has it all. The S symbol is often used for reference to the sun.

Contact us to arrange a showroom visit or home visit soon, we would love to show you this exquisite and rare antique Shirvan rug up close.  So you can fully appreciate the amazing colours and condition.

. . .

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are generally found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
