Ziegler carpets are one of the most famous types of decorative carpets due to a Swiss businessman who In 1883 used his company Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England to establish a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia. Which employed designers from major western department stores such as A B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold, decorative all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts. Taking the small intricate patterns of finer persian carpets and enlarging the floral motifs to use on these Zieglers.

A unique and exceedingly rare antique Ziegler carpet, in the hardest to find small size. Antique carpets around 9 x 6 feet, have always been the hardest to source and purchase. Purely because weavers and workshops favoured producing larger sizes or small rugs. We feel this small format Ziegler could well have been commissioned to sit with a larger Ziegler in a spacious drawing room perhaps.
Condition is very good for a carpet of this age. Some lower areas of pile is noticeable at one end, but a decent soft wool pile is apparent on 90% of this rare carpet. Professionally washed by ourselves, it is ready to be shown in situ, and used at home, supplied with our sturdy underlay.
