Rare Antique Karapinar rug

Circa 1850
183 × 128 cm 6’ x 4’2”
£18,500

Description

Antique Karapinar rugs and carpets are among the most intriguing examples, boasting very distinct designs, similar to that of Azerbaijan rugs known as Caucasian rugs. Karapinar in Turkish means ‘black spring’ – while this may suggest darker colours and patterns, in actual fact Karapinar rugs used bold designs and vivid natural colours.

This is a very rare and collectable example, all original and untouched, this tribal rug dates from the mid 19th century, dating it to around 170 years old.  With early dyes, design and with an open latch-hook motif, the weaver has produced a striking rug.  We can see the original kilim ends at both ends, with some original fringes showing too.  There is a couple of small areas of damage in the kilim, and a couple of small wear lines in the main pile.  The wool pile is exceptionally thick and lush in general, making this a remarkable and collectable find. Our expert workshop could improve the wear and damage in the kilim if required, it has been left to show its originality and rarity.

Historically, antique Karapinar rugs and carpets have been woven in Southern Anatolia, an area in Turkey with a rich and vibrant history in the arts and weaving.
