A beautiful tribal antique Moghan rug from the Caucasus and in the Trans-Caucasian region of North-West Persia. Dating from the mid 19th century, the dyes have mellowed exquisitely, with saffron yellows, aubergine dyes and beautiful greens. Moghan Kazak rugs often can be seen using star motifs in the border, and this piece uses the wonderful ‘Genje’ stripes as the main design with subtle ‘Boteh’ motifs. A remarkable example of tribal Caucasian weaving, in excellent condition. With minimal preservation restoration. Like geometric Shashavan rugs, which were woven in the Trans-Caucasian of North Persia, Moghan rugs and their composition relate to Caucasian rugs rather than Persian rugs.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.
