Ancient Silk Bursa rug

Circa 1800
285 × 187 cm 9’4” x 6’1”
£25,000

Description

An ancient masterpiece, this silk Bursa rug is more than 200 years old and very finely woven.  A true masterpiece of weaving from the city of Bursa in north-west Anatolia.  Bursa was extremely important for the Ottoman silk trade, acting as a focal point for importing silk from China to Persia, and the city of Bursa itself produced exceptional silk rugs.  The detail and colour palette are graceful and retain the dyes colours from the early 1800’s.  It is one of the finest weaves we have seen in over 30 years, the skill to weave a silk rug this fine is remarkable.  The background dye is a light aubergine colour to our eye, with a golden yellow and green toned border.  Deep indigo blues have been used along reds and pale blues for the floral design.

As this silk rug is a very early example, their are some to be expected areas of wear, and old restoration too.  We have taken 15 additional images, so you can view the rugs condition up close, all taken in natural light. We would recommend viewing the rug in person to see how beautiful it is, as the photographs really do not do it justice.  This rug is a work of art, it can still be used as a decorative item on the floor, if placed in a bedroom or low traffic area, it would also be stunning as a wall hanging too.

Contact us to organise viewing this exceptional rare rug at home or in our showroom soon.  We are open Monday to Saturday by appointment and our home visits can be arranged throughout the UK on a day and time to suit you.
