Description

Woven around 1870-1880 this exceptional antique Shirvan rug is in extremely good original condition with a high fine wool pile and the original ends/fringes in place.  There is no major restoration to speak of, only one little repair to a small burn, which looks to be very old.  This bold antique caucasian rug has what is known as a Lesghi ‘Star’ repeating four times in the centre of the rug.

. . .

With a classical Kufic border design, the word Kufic refers to an early form of Arabic calligraphy and this design has been used on caucasian rugs and Persian rugs.  Always vivid in colour, this rug is no exception with deep indigo blues and vibrant reds.  Caucasian rugs ooze colour and interest and this piece does not disappoint.  A rare rug for a collector or to be used as a decorative item, please see all the images to see the condition up close, any further questions we will be happy to help you.

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
