Antique Bidjar bag face

Circa 1890
65 × 58 cm 2’1” x 1’10”
£2,950

Description

This is a beautiful antique Bidjar bag face, that has been carefully sewn onto a hessian wrapped wooden frame, which can be hung on a wall.  A really wonderful way to use these amazing antique bag faces as art for the wall.  The size of the frame is 65 cm high x 58 cm wide, and the size of the Bidjar bag is 49 cm high by 54 cm wide.

Woven by the nomadic weavers in Bidjar, Persia, these tribal bags would have originally been used as storage bags, and would have had a kilim backing which usually gets worn away from this wool piled front of the bag.  It is rare to find these tribal bag faces from Bidjar, as they generally produced rugs, carpets and runners, they did also produce wagireh which is the term for a sampler.  So they did weave smaller pieces, but unusual to find bag faces in good condition from the late 19th century.

Over 130 years old the dyes on these bags are still vibrant, being all natural dyes.  As the bag face has been carefully sewn onto the frame it can be removed at any point too.

Purchase this wonderful mounted antique Bidjar bag face via our secure checkout and we can safely wrap it and courier it to your home.  Or please book in a home visit or showroom visit to see this wonderful wall hanging up close.

Rugs from Bidjar are very tough due to their structure which consists of usually five weft threads, two are loose wool threads followed by one taut cotton thread, then a further two loose wool threads. These are tightly beaten together against the knots, creating an extremely tight, compact rug. They tend to be floral in design, with the ‘Herati’ fish design commonly used in the main field and border or the ‘Mina-Khani’ floral design all over as in this example.
