Description

Striking yellow antique Mahal rug from the early 20th century! Such a vibrant and fun antique rug, it could almost be contemporary with this colour palette.  A lovely scrolling border design compliments the stylised floral motifs in the main field, with small Harshang design in the pattern too.  Along with the vibrant yellows, the greens and pinks work so well as secondary colours and the dark indigo blue border adds the right amount of contrast to ground the rug.

Mahal carpets and rugs were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
