Antique Afshar rug

Circa 1890
158 × 130 cm 5’2” x 4’3”
£3,250

Description

Antique Afshar rug woven in the south-west of Persia in the late 19th century with a colourful vibrant interesting pattern of repeating boteh’s in the main field design. Woven on a soft wool foundation, they tend to be light to touch and with a floppy handle such as this antique rug and come in a variety of designs. This rug is no exception, amazing soft wool in a fantastic variety of colours.

. . .

The rug is also beautifully finished with the original kilim ends showing.

The condition is fairly good, with a low cut pile all over but no significant restoration.  We have preserved the side-cords adding the original multicoloured design matching the original.  With our excellent sturdy underlay included, this would sit happily on the floor.  Often we find these rugs hung on the wall too as they are like a work of art!

Afshars are a tribal group which originally came from Azerbijan, between the Tigris and Euphrates, but after a dispute in the late 16th century with the Turkish sultan they left their homeland for their location during the late 19th century in the south of Persia.
