Distressed Antique Afshar rug

Circa 1890
156 × 115 cm 5’1” x 3’9”

Description

A distressed Antique Afshar rug woven in the south-west of Persia in the late 19th century.  The design is a classical pattern from these weavers, using a geometric medallion and similar stylised motifs in each of the four corners.  Lovely pale off white ivory minor borders, and soft red main border using gentle flowers.  We can even see original kilim ends at both ends which more often are lost over 100 years of use.

The background dyes are deep blue to almost black and are showing signs of wear more in the black dyes, which is probably due to the amount of iron in the wool, this can lead to this corrosion effect.  As the other dyes are still mainly in tact and showing medium wool pile height.  Even though this is a distressed antique rug, we will supply underlay included in the price, which adds strength to the rug and stops more wear, as it stops the rug moving on the floor.

An attractive antique tribal rug which we can happily show to you in our barn showroom or in situ by appointment.

. . .

Afshar’s are a tribal group which originally came from Azerbaijan, between the Tigris and Euphrates, but after a dispute in the late 16th century with the Turkish sultan they left their homeland for their location during the late 19th century in the south of Persia.
