Description

An extremely intricate classical antique Mohtasham Kashan rug woven in Kashan around 1880-1890. These rugs were woven with the finest merino wool which is extremely soft to touch and helped the weavers produce these fine and beautifully detailed rugs.  This example uses the soft olive green dye in large corner spandrels with the softer terracotta medallion and a smaller deep blue central design.

. . .

This piece is quite open in its design compared to some Mohtasham Kashan rugs, often the weaver would weave extremely intricate patterns.  A wonderful classical Persian rug in near perfect condition.

Kashan was a center of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets are known as Mohtashan.
