Antique square Shirvan Kilim

Circa 1880
172 × 136 cm 5’7” x 4’5”

Beautiful fine antique Shirvan kilim from the Caucasus with wonderful vibrant vegetable dyes, a real collectors piece.  A very finely woven Shirvan kilim in fantastic condition from the late 19th century. Amazing use of vegetable dyes make this a very special rug.  Well drawn medallions, surrounded by beautiful motifs and simple effective border design.

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus.

. . .

With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.  They also produced finely woven kilims such as this exceptional example.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment. Request a home visit to see this exceptional antique kelim in situ.
