Rare Antique Serapi rug

Description
This is an exquisite fine Serapi rug of the highest order, very rare to find one in excellent pile and with a rich red border and main red central medallion, with the softest of sky blue centres! The gold tones with greens and some deeper indigo blues are the amazing dyes the Heriz weavers used in the 19th century. Serapi are also famed for their four ivory corner spandrels, this always lift the rugs composition.
Condition is very good, the pile height is medium high and consistent all over. Both end fringes have been professionally rewoven, as unfortunately they often get damaged over 100 years of use. Even todays powerful hoovers, pets and the general wear can take its toll on the fringe area. We have had the ends rewoven by the best restorers, to the work is exceptional and to the untrained eye not noticeable, as the weave and colours have been matched perfectly. Antique Serapi rugs and carpets are more intricate finer tribal weavings of the Heriz region hand-woven by Azerbaijan Turkish inhabitants close to the city of Heriz in North-West Persia. They are famous among collectors because of their vivid vegetable dyes or soft earth tones that are woven on a geometric pattern. In terms of design, drawing, and coloration as well, Serapi carpets are clearly part of one and the same tradition as Heriz, despite being a distinct antique rug style, which originated as a Northwest Persian adaptation of early Sarouk Farahan medallion, but with a more geometric, abstract, village sensibility.
