Description

A very fine and intricate pattern on this late 19th century antique Bidjar rug.  Woven with a classical Herati design in the red main field and wonderful flowing border design in deep blue.  In very good order all over for a rug of this age.  Gorgeous pale blues have been used in the minor border and pattern to great effect, lifting the whole rugs palette.

The famous ‘Herati’ design is the pattern we see in the main field, which consists of two stylised leaves around a flower.  In the 16th century this used to be two fish swimming around a water-lily.  A great antique rug in wonderful condition, professionally washed and supplied with our sturdy anti-slip rug underlay.

Visit our barn showroom soon to see this rug up close and over a 1000 more.  We hold one of the largest collections of antique rugs and contemporary carpets in the UK.

. . .

Rugs from Bidjar are very tough due to their structure which consists of usually five weft threads, two are loose wool threads followed by one taut cotton thread, then a further two loose wool threads. These are tightly beaten together against the knots, creating an extremely tight, compact rug. They tend to be floral in design, with the ‘Herati’ fish design commonly used in the main field and border or the ‘Mina-Khani’ floral design all over as in this example.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire the UK & Europe by appointment.  Request a home visit to see this beautiful antique Bidjar rug in-situ.
