Woven in a Kurdish town in West Persia – Bidjar rugs are famous for weaving tough carpets and rugs in varying designs. This is a rare antique Bidjar rug, which is almost like a large wagireh, which is the term for a sampler, woven as a template or pattern for a larger carpet. As the stunning pale blue large border at either end has not been repeated for the side borders and framed with the natural white wool minor border. The large palmette patterns with harshang designs in the centre are ancient designs seen on large Bidjar carpets and various over weaves such as Farahan too.
Saturated dyes, and in brilliant condition, as Bidjar’s are notably tough and strong weaves this ancient rare rug is quite a stunning piece of history. The blue border designs also shows the so-called ‘turtle’ motif, see the pink and golden yellow designs resembling the animal.
Rugs from Bidjar are very tough due to their structure which consists of usually five weft threads, two are loose wool threads followed by one taut cotton thread, then a further two loose wool threads. These are tightly beaten together against the knots, creating an extremely tight, compact rug.
