Rare Antique Ziegler carpet

Circa 1880
520 × 425 cm 17’ x 13’11”
£70,000

Description

An extraordinary golden yellow antique Ziegler carpet from the late 19th century. It is incredibly rare to come across this background colour due to the expensive yellow dyes. More often using saffron or turmeric to dye the wool to get this remarkable colour, in the late 19th century it would have been a costly exercise and usually these grand carpets from the Sultanabad workshop in Persia were commissioned for stately homes across Europe and the US.

Corrosion can be seen on the ancient brown dyes, this colour wool has a lot of iron properties due to the wool dying process, which is why it has corroded over the last 130 plus years.  This has to be one of our favourite antique Ziegler carpets we have ever had in our collection, and it will very soon be seen in a new movie…. with famous actors have walked over it, we personally cannot wait to see the film!

Our home visits can be requested for anywhere in the UK, we have travelled as far as Scotland and Ireland to show our carpets in situ. Visiting our barn showroom is also available Monday to Saturday and can be booked in by appointment on our website too.

You can also reserve this carpet for your home or project too, use our latest feature, clicking on Reserve for us to organise this for you.

Ziegler & Co a Manchester-based Swiss producer was a genius in creating the worlds most desirable and decorative carpets. Using wool from Manchester, UK he had workshops in Sultanabad and supplied Liberty and Harvey Nichols.  Ziegler & Co were instrumental in shaping how decorative carpets would be produced in Persia and what designs would be woven in Sultanabad for the next 50 years. The company’s designs were essentially Western versions of finer Persian designs,  their large scale floral designs and often enormous sizes were modified to the specifications of Western retailers.  Most of the Ziegler production was shipped to New York and London.
