Rare Antique Senneh rug

Circa 1870

Description

An exceptional and outstanding rare antique Senneh rug, dating from circa 1870 the weave is extremely fine indeed.  This amazing rug has an intricate small all over Herati design, which in early carpets from the 16-17th century depicted two fish swimming around a water-lily.  Rugs in the 19th century had this design stylised two leaves around a flower. This rug actually shows fish, which is rare to see, the design is also larger like on early pieces.  Dyes are stunning with a pale faded pinkish red border, deep dark blues almost black for the background, which has corrosion due to the dyes iron properties.  Giving the whole pattern an amazing embossed effect and feel.

A remarkable and rare Senneh rug, in an unusual larger size, woven over 150 years ago and in exceptional original condition.  This shows the quality of Persian weavings from the 1800’s, they made rugs and carpets with the best materials to last.  A timeless piece of floor art!

Senneh or Senna, now called Sanandaj which is the capital of the Kurdistan province in Persia produced a variety of exceptional and decorative pieces by Kurd weavers in the late 19th century. Fine Senneh carpets, rugs and runners are often delicate in their design and their distinctive, weaving technique. Varying in design from all over floral shrub designs, Gol Farang designs and medallion patterns, their colours are often blue, red and using natural ivory wool.
