Antique Seirafian rug

Circa 1930
242 × 152 cm 7’11” x 4’11”
£ POA

Description

A rare silk green border and silk red background with wool detailing and silk wrapped gold thread have all been used to weave this incredibly fine antique Seirafian rug, signed by Hossein Seirafian.

The knot count is 26 knots by 30 knots making it 780 knots per Sq inch. Woven around 1930, this rug has lived in a private collection for over 50 years and is in mint condition.

Hossein Seirafian, the seventh brother of the Seirafian family to his father Reza, unfortunately passed away in 1986 at a relatively young age, so he was only producing carpets for a comparatively short amount of time. His designs range from classic medallion patterns to horizontal pictorial scenes. His later carpets carry a modified bottom Seirafian signature with his full name added (or squeezed in) in English letters.

A rare masterpiece of Seirafian weaving history on offer, please view all the additional images to see the amazing detail and workmanship all created by hand around 90 years ago in Isfahan.

Isfahan is situated virtually in the centre of Iran, and was once the capital city. The rugs are woven in the city itself and the surrounding villages. Starting in the early 17th century, their name was renowned throughout Europe – this has continued to the present day. Although rug making was interrupted by the Afghan invasion, it quickly re-established itself as a major centre for the finest handmade carpets. This example show cases why Isfahan are famous for weaving the most detailed, beautiful fine rugs.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets and rugs in your own home, a free, no obligation service we have offered for over 30 years.  Roderic, Stephen and Kristian have been working with antique rugs since 1990 and would be delighted to help you find the perfect rug.
