A rare very fine antique Daghestan prayer rug in excellent condition, woven with the date 1898. Listed in R. Benardout’s 1983 ‘Antique Rugs’ publication.
Daghestan is located in the north east of the Caucasus and includes the weaving areas of Kuba and Shirvan. They tend to have small-scale allover designs utilizing multiple repetitions in fine detail, often adapted to prayer rugs by adding a simplified niche or mihrab at the top of the design.
