Rare Antique Ziegler carpet

Circa 1880
320 × 280 cm 10’5” x 9’2”
£19,000

Description

Ancient antique Ziegler carpet, circa 1885 with an unusual shield design and scrolling vines, we have only seen this on one other Ziegler which we actually have in our collection.  View Reference 9707 to see this ancient Ziegler carpet too.  Amazing large leaves in the border design and varying dyes have been used throughout all the colours, the dye change is what gives these antique carpets their appeal in many ways.  With the depth of colour and variety of each shade adding so much character.  We have deep greens to pale blues in the background with rare yellow tones, and brownish red tones in the border.  The whole composition is really wonderful.  A rare and decorative carpet.

This Ziegler has a very early look to it, it could even be a pre-Ziegler production and be earlier around 1860-1870.  Woven in Sultanabad, Persia the home of the famous carpets, the weave and pile is that of this workshop.

With the age of this carpet we can see wear in many areas, old restoration is visible in the border and in the main background in places.  In some ways the wear and repairs do not effect the look at all, and in fact add to its ancient allure.

The history of Ziegler carpets: In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

If you would like us to visit you to show you this rare antique Ziegler carpet in situ, please request a home visit to select a convenient day and time.  We travel nationwide, having visited clients in Scotland, Ireland and in Europe over the last 30 years.

Ziegler carpets are famous due to an intelligent and visionary Swiss businessman who In 1883 used his company Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England to establish a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia.  Which employed designers from major western department stores such as A B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold, decorative all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.  Taking the small intricate patterns of finer Persian carpets and enlarging the floral motifs to use on these Ziegler’s.
