Antique Heriz runner

Circa 1900
274 × 60 cm 8’11” x 1’11”
£3,250

Description

A lovely rustic and narrow antique runner from Heriz in North-West Persia, woven around 1900-1910.  With a soft and medium high wool pile all over, professionally washed by ourselves and ready for the floor.  We supply excellent underlay with item, which helps the runner stay still, sit flat and keeps it secure on the floor.  We love the warm red/brownish brick tones on this piece, with varying pale blue dyes and soft yellowish dyes.

Beautiful Mina-Khani floral design runner down the main area of the design, with a small pale blue border.  Mina-Khani design is often on Bidjar runners from Persia too, not often seen on Heriz runners but a lovely design, a very rare narrow size too! We struggle to source excellent condition antique runners of this original width.

Heriz and Karaja are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star.  The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use a simpler repeating medallion design with a great array of colour.
