Circa 1930
450 × 80 cm 14’9” x 2’7”
£4,200

Description

A lovely off-white background on this 1930’s Heriz runner, with soft brick reds and pale greens and blues.  Some lovely geometric motifs, stylised animals of birds and deer, and curved boteh motifs.  Being a slightly younger runner of around 90 years old, the wool pile is dense, and in perfect order.

Heriz and Karaja are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star.  The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use a simpler repeating medallion design with a great array of colour.
