Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1910
340 × 258 cm 11’1” x 8’5”

A really attractive antique Mahal carpet dating from the early 20th century,  with a soft wool pile and minimal lower areas of pile, adding to this lovely country house looking antique carpet.  Unusual sunburst design on this Mahal, more-often this design was used on a larger scale in oversize carpets.  The sunburst motif is the off-white pattern running down the centre of the carpet, plus in teal blue either side in the centre.  Some gorgeous pale greens have been used as-well.

All professionally cleaned and in original order it is ready to use on the floor.  Not having a central medallion makes this an easy antique carpet to place in a variety of rooms.  Woven around circa 1910 the colours have faded beautifully, these carpets from northern Persia are full of charm and suit country houses to London apartments.

Please request a home visit to see this antique carpet in-situ, where you can select a convenient day and time for us to visit. Or book in a visit to our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey we would love to welcome you here.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
