Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1910
420 × 312 cm 13’9” x 10’2”
£15,000

Description

Beautiful Mahal carpet with warm colours in excellent condition all over with a high full pile.  The soft wool and design of this Mahal make it an attractive piece, that would look fantastic under a dining table or in a living room.  It has a great variant of colour, using greens, yellows, pinks and pale blues.  It helps not having a large central motif to place it in a drawing room or study as well, a very versatile carpet that has great potential to build a scheme around.  This piece was woven around circa 1900-1910 and has the original ends/fringes in tact, it has had some minimal tidying up in places but no major restoration or re-piling.

. . .

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure.  Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
