Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1890
434 × 310 cm 14’2” x 10’2”
£8,950

Description

Dating from 1890-1900 this deep blue background antique Mahal carpet is beautifully distressed. The rustic orange/red tone border works so well with the all over design, known as the ‘sunburst’ design, the stylised motifs representing the sun.  Condition is quite worn in areas, but in good structural order and with pile.

We rarely hold distressed antique carpets in our inventory, unless they are as attractive as this! No major holes or tears, just general scattered wear in places.  Adding to the carpets character and charm. Our underlay would aid the carpets condition greatly, as it stops the carpet moving around on the floor adding body to it.

Please request a home visit to see this distressed antique Mahal carpet in situ to see if it works with your interior.  We travel all over the UK showing our carpets and rugs in situ and we would love to help you soon.

Or book in a visit to our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey we would love to welcome you here soon.

We offer the professional service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire,  and anywhere else in UK by appointment. Having travelled to Ireland, Scotland and even Europe over the last 30 years we love to travel showing our carpets to customers and interior designers.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
