This antique Mahal carpet is such an attractive and decorative carpet, with all natural dyes dating from 1890-1900. We have always loved the pale blue the weavers used over 120 years ago and this lovely piece is full of this wonderful dye! The off white lattice pattern gives this red ground carpet a lot of life, as this colour uplifts the whole palette. A varying border of blue, grey tones balances the whole piece beautifully.
With a soft wool pile it has been professionally cleaned by our workshop and in original order it is ready to use on the floor. Not having a central medallion makes this an easy antique carpet to place in a variety of rooms. Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
