As Ziegler & Co had inspired and created decorative floral carpets being woven in Sultanabad in the late 19th century other workshops locally followed suit and these designs were made in competition.
The dyes are all natural with deep madder red/orange border colours, wonderful indigo blues, and pale blues on the floral design which lift the whole composition of the carpet. With some stunning green and gentle dusky pink floral motifs too. It is interesting too how some of the flowers are yellow and blue at one end and change as time went on weaving the carpet. These characteristics are always what draw people to antique carpets, as there is always something interesting to look at and admire.
The condition is really exceptional, with a lovely consistent pile height. Woven with quality wool, it has provided the durability to survive being used for over 100 years. The carpet has no significant repairs, with minimal preservation done to the side-cords and the fringes are all original too.
We love to help customers and interior designers source the ideal carpet for a room, if this beautiful antique Mahal carpet is of interest to you please email us to arrange a time to view it in-situ or in our showroom in Crondall, Surrey. We travel all over London the UK & Europe showing our carpets in situ.
Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
