Description
A rustic antique Mahal carpet woven around 1890-1900, over 120 years old, beautifully hand-woven with terracotta, orange rust tones, ivory corners and subtle golden yellow centre diamond. A deep indigo blue border frames this colour palette so well, some scattered areas of wear, but structurally secure and in original condition. In a rare square size too, at 332 x 328 cm.
A beautiful carpet for a drawing room, bedroom, study or entrance hall. We would supply sturdy anti-slip underlay with this carpet, to aid its strength on the floor and it also helps preserve the carpet too. As wear is more-often caused by a carpet moving on a floor, creating creases which over time turn into wear.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
