Antique Karaja rug

Circa 1890
190 × 147 cm 6’2” x 4’9”
£2,950

Description

A tribal antique Karaja rug with fantastic bold geometric designs! The fine flowers in the centre have been beautifully executed and are woven on a variant of blues in the background.  The variation in the indigo blue dyes adds a lot of character and is known as an abrash, which is the term for dye change.  The leaf and floral terracotta border is simple and works well with this bold design.

A fine weave on this antique rug from north-west Persia and in very good condition.  The wool pile is high on the majority of this rug, one area pictured on the bottom right of the main image is lower in pile.  The ends and sides are original and it is a rare design to find in a smaller Karaja rug.  Woven around 1880 – 1890 it shows how tough these rugs are.  It is still an extremely durable and attractive rug for a hall, study, landing area or in front of a fire.

Karaja carpets, rugs and runners were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border. They always depict geometric floral designs and often people and animals too.
