Description

Exquisite very fine Isfahan carpet woven on a silk foundation with the most intricate design and unusual palette of colours, dating from the 1940’s.  Emerald green medallion design, deep blue border, ivory main field colour with pale blue intricate scrolling vines.  An absolute masterpiece of weaving! It would have taken years to weave this carpet all by hand.  Expert weavers would have used a drawing known as a ‘cartoon’ so they knew exactly where each knot of wool went to create this complicated beautiful design.

. . .

Isfahan is situated virtually in the centre of Persia, and was once the capital city. The rugs are woven in the city itself and the surrounding villages. Starting in the early 17th century, their name was renowned throughout Europe – this has continued to the present day. Although rug making was interrupted by the Afghan invasion, it quickly re-established itself as a major centre for the finest handmade carpets. This example show cases why Isfahan are famous for weaving the most detailed, beautiful fine carpets.
