Description

A warm, colourful all over design antique Mahal carpet in really good condition all over woven around 1910.  A deep blue indigo dye border design and soft greens and pale blues in the floral motifs.  The all over design consists of flowing vine work in-between flowers and leaves.  Some burnt orange dyes are used too.  Wonderful design and colours to place in a room, please view all the photographs to see the colours close up.

. . .

The condition is extremely good for a 100 year old carpet with no major wear or damage, Mahal carpets use soft wool and are generally very durable.  The fringes are original too.  Please request a home visit to select a convenient day and time for you to view this antique Mahal carpet at home.  We love to travel all over the UK showing carpets in situ, helping you choose the right carpet for your home.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.  Neighbours to Heriz carpets there designs are very different as Heriz tend to be quite angular and geometric whereas Mahal carpets are generally more open in design and curvilinear.
