Description

A very rare early antique Silk Fereghan rug woven around 1850. Some wear to the centre does not detract from the beauty of this vase design silk rug. With exquisite soft purple dyes and woven with the highest quality silk.

Fereghan carpets and rugs are unlike their neighbours Sarouk which are more formal often using a medallion. Fereghan weavers preferred floral motifs of shrubs and vines using more green dyes and hints of yellow. This early silk fereghan rug uses the one way vase design beautifully, dyes famous from Fereghan are often these muted purple tones and greens.

. . .

Since the 18th century, Fereghan carpets and rugs have come from the area between Arak and Kashan in Western Persia.  Fereghan carpets have always used varying designs, often a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, sometimes with lattice work and most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  As well as decorative all over floral patterns, it is not uncommon to see a central medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border.  As well as producing fine silk rugs too, Fereghan is a fascinating type of weaving.
