Rare Antique Kirman rug

Circa 1900
245 × 156 cm 8’ x 5’1”
£20,000

Description

A remarkable and vibrant rare antique Kirman rug in excellent condition, also in an unusual rare size too. The dyes used in the weaving of this rug are truly fantastic. The variety and depth of colour along with the finest weave and intricate design makes this one of the best Kirman rugs we have ever had in our collection, a real work of art.  Woven around the turn of the 20th Century this rug is around 120 years old.

The condition is really exceptional, with a fine short cut pile and a tight weave, one old repair is apparent at one end, which has been repaired expertly.  The pile is very soft and medium high all over, no marks or stains and professionally washed by ourselves.  It is ready to be used on the floor or hung on a wall as a work of art.

In the world of antique Persian rugs, Kerman carpets are celebrated as being among the best. Kerman rugs are prized by collectors for many reasons, including a wide range of designs, a broad palette, use of natural dyes and fibers, great tensile strength and abrasion resistance, and expert color combinations. No two Kerman rugs are precisely alike, but these general characteristics typify this enduringly popular style.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire the UK & Europe by appointment. Please request a home visit to arrange a time to see this beautiful antique rug in your own home.  Or visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey and we can show you all of our collection.

. . .

Kerman rugs or Kirman rugs are one of the traditional classifications of Persian rugs. They are named after Kerman the city and a province located in south central Persia though, as with other such designations the term describes a type which may have been manufactured somewhere else. Kerman has been a major center for the production of high quality carpets since at least the 15th century. In the 18th century, some authors considered the carpets from the province of Kerman, especially at Siftan, to be the finest of all Persian carpets because of the quality of the finest wool used.
