Antique square Mahal carpet

Circa 1910
325 × 320 cm 10’7” x 10’5”
£25,000

Description

A beautiful, rare, square antique Mahal carpet with stunning soft colours in excellent condition and an open floral palmette design.  The colours are exquisite and varied, from soft greens and muted brown red dyes to the sludgy greens and indigo blues.  All woven on a soft red background, with wonderful abrash, which is subtle dye change.  This only happens on antique carpets, as dyes fade and oxidise over 100 plus years, giving immense character and interest.

Highly decorative and a rare antique carpet, this would look amazingon an oak floor for instance or in a drawing room or study on sisal too.  Lovely colours to work with when putting together a room, picking fabrics from this carpet would be a delight!   Please look at all the additional close up photographs below to see this carpets amazing condition and colours.

If you would like to view this carpet at home, we would love to show it to you soon.  Or if you would like to visit our showroom, book in a day and time, we are open Monday to Saturday by appointment.  As we travel nationwide, occasionally our showroom is closed for home appointments.

. . .

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.  Neighbours to Heriz carpets there designs are very different as Heriz tend to be quite angular and geometric whereas Mahal carpets are generally more open in design and curvilinear.

Please request a home visit to select a convenient day and time for you to view this carpet at home.  We love to travel all over the UK showing carpets in situ, helping you choose the right carpet for your home.
