Antique Karabagh rug

Circa 1890
255 × 205 cm 8’4” x 6’8”
£9,000

Description

Karabagh rugs and runners came in varying designs and colours and were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced interesting and vibrant rugs known as Caucasian rugs. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the Western market.  This Karabagh rug is no exception using deep blue almost black dyes famous from this weaving area, and vivid pinks and reds too.  A striking and wonderful rare size too, being almost square in size and in good condition too.
