A very handsome antique Mahal rug woven in the late 19th century and with rich warm dyes.  Look at all the interesting details on this rug, small animals, stars and stylised flowers.  We love the deep indigo blues and soft reds, the natural whites and pale blues and greens are wonderful additional colours.  The condition is really exceptional with a brilliant soft wool pile all over this antique rug.    Washed and ready for the floor, a fabulous rare and early rug.

Mahal carpets and rugs were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure.  Floral motifs and overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western colour palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
