Antique Karaja runner

Circa 1910
331 × 97 cm 10’10” x 3’2”
£3,250

Description

An excellent tribal antique Karaja runner with a fabulous array of dyes.  Date wise this was woven around 1900-1910, and in brilliant pile and condition.  Original fringes and sides showing and a great pile over the runner.  A couple of slight lower pile areas but nothing significant.

We love the variety of greens and blues on a rust red background on this hard to find small size runner.  Heriz and Karaja are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star, as we can see on this runner.  The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use this repeating medallion design with a great array of colours.
