Description

An early Mahal carpet from before 1880, with early dyes and rustic charm.  This antique Mahal has an all over abstract symmetrical pattern, with an array of fabulous colour.  The soft madder red background is a great palette to allow the greens, pale blues, soft pinks and aubergines to sing.  The minor green border is lovely too, which changes to pale blues as the weavers ran out of this dye.

A wonderful open feel to this piece, ideal for a drawing room, study or entrance hall.  The condition is very nice, with a soft wool pile and minimal lower areas.  Some corrosion can be seen to the black dyes, due to the iron properties of the wool from this time of weaving.

We love to help customers and interior designers source the ideal carpet for a room, if this beautiful antique Mahal carpet is of interest to you please call or email us to arrange a time to view it in-situ or in our showroom in Crondall, Surrey.  We travel all over London and the UK showing our carpets in situ.

. . .

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
