Gabbeh rug

Contemporary
147 × 101 cm 4’9” x 3’3”
£550

Description

Hand-woven by women using wool from the sheep they herded, these beautiful minimalistic nomadic rugs come from Southern Persia and the area of Shiraz.  Known as Gabbeh rugs, these were woven for their own use, and primarily as a mattress / bed, as the wool is so soft and the pile is denser than most hand-made rugs.

This Gabbeh rug was woven around 20-30 years ago and is still in excellent condition.  All washed and ready to be used again.

Gabbeh rugs are nomadic rugs woven by the women of the Qashqai tribe in the Zagros mountains of South-West Persia. The word Gabbeh comes from Farsi and translated means raw, uncut or unfinished.  This references their primitive style and minimal designs, using often natural un-dyed wool and thick pile.
