Arts and Craft design carpet

Contemporary
381 × 318 cm 12’6” x 10’5”
£6,200

Description

Based on traditional Arts and Craft designs of the famous Donegal carpets, this stunning contemporary carpet is all hand-woven using natural dyes and wool.  The colours used in this carpet are just beautiful, the yellow ground is stunning, surrounded by a madder border with wonderful greens and blues throughout forming a beautiful repeating palmette design.  We have photographed this carpet in natural light, as the yellow background is unusual it does change colour from different angles, and due to the carpets texture.  So the close up images are lighter than the overhead image, as we are closer to the carpet.

The quality is exceptional, woven with soft wool and a lush pile, this luxurious carpet embodies the history of Donegal Irish carpets using a palette of dyes and arts and craft patterns similar to what would have been produced in the 20th Century movement.  We have a collection of classical designs recreated in contemporary carpets available, all hand-produced and extremely good value.

Donegal carpets were produced in Killybegs, Ireland from 1898, by Scottish textile manufacturer Alexander Morton, predominantly these carpets were custom made to order. Later designs from the early 20th century used the stylised floral patterns of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Those by the architect and designer Charles Voysey were especially popular. The company also made a number of carpets in the Celtic Revival style.  Donegal carpets were purchased for Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the White House in Washington.
