Antique Lilihan runner

Circa 1920
520 × 104 cm 17’ x 3’4”
£3,950

Description

A very open floral design on this long antique Lilihan runner, with a large scale repeating flower and vine design, which has been woven in unusual way.  We love the pale blues, pinks and varying background of orange to red to brownish tones.  This change in dye has happened over the last 100 years, plus the size of the runner dictates that the weaver used varying dyed wool over the length of time to weave it.  It could have taken up to a year to weave this long runner, the width is fairly consistent, as often they can be woven not so straight.  This runner is fairly straight and with great colour!

Lilihan rugs were woven South of where Sarouks were produced in the village of Saruk in the Arak region of Persia. Hence they often have very similar design traits, using elegant floral designs and often Lilihan rugs were woven in unusual colours, they also were one of few weaving areas that made squarer proportion rugs.  The finest of the modern Sarouk rugs comes from the small town of Ghiassabad. These town rugs from Sarouk and Lilihan and carpets were commissioned for the western market around the beginning of the 20th Century and always had scrolling vines and floral motifs woven in soft colours.
