Description

Wonderful colourful antique Karabagh runner from the north-west Persia into Azerbaijan region.  A luxurious soft pile on this finely woven caucasian runner.  The cochineal dye is famous in rugs from Karabagh as they loved to use this dye to create amazing purples and deep reds. We just love this purple/pink colour in these rugs! Condition for a long runner of this size is very good, with a couple of small old areas of restoration and minimal low pile at one end.

. . .

We are always extremely busy restoring clients carpets, rugs and runners that often our own pieces are the last to have work done to them.  So we could definitely improve the 2 small repairs and the one end, it is not significant work to do so.  You can see the small old repairs in the additional images.

The pattern consists of an all over ‘Boteh’ design with these being well drawn and executed by an accomplished weaver, the stripes in the minor border are full of stunning greens, yellows and pale blue.  This excellent 130 plus year old runner would brighten up a long corridor, adding an abundance of charm and interest.

Karabagh’s were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area famous for producing these long corridor runners and vast kelleh carpets. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the West.  Caucasian rugs and runners are collectable for their vivid colours and geometric designs.
